Job Description

PQE: 1-3 Term: Permanent Working hours: Full-time Department: Employment Location: Cardiff The firm

Lewis Silkin is a UK top-100 commercial law firm with offices in London, Oxford, Cardiff and Hong Kong. The firm is recognised by clients and industries alike as being distinct: for its deep understanding, insight and advice to creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses; for its market-leading international practice in employment, immigration and reward; and for delivering pragmatic, commercial advice in a refreshingly human way.

With 56 partners and more than 300 staff, the firm is structured around two key divisions; Employment, Immigration and Reward, and Creators, Makers and Innovators.

The Employment, Immigration and Reward team is consistently top-ranked, and was named HR Law Firm of the Year 2015 by the Legal 500. With around 80 lawyers, Lewis Silkin’s employment and immigration team offers an unrivalled service supporting clients, including many of the world’s leading businesses, on their HR, employment and immigration law needs domestically and internationally.

The Creators, Makers and Innovators team is made up of leading advisers for creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses, offering a deep understanding of the industry sectors in which clients operate combined with real expertise across a wide range of legal services. From start-ups to multinationals, the firm’s comprehensive and commercially focused advice helps clients succeed in an increasingly complex and converged international marketplace.

The department

The employment team is one of the leading employment law practices both domestically and internationally. Our team is amongst the largest in the UK with 19 employment partners and around 60 other specialist lawyers. Consistently top ranked by independent legal directories, we have more recognised experts in employment than any other UK firm.  The majority of our lawyers are based at our London office in Chancery Lane and we also have offices in Oxford, Cardiff, and Hong Kong.

The work of the team as a whole is a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters, for a wide range of clients.  Employment, Immigration and Reward lawyers also undertake a significant amount of business development work including giving seminars and producing Lewis Silkin branded publications.  There is a significant international element to the Division’s work, largely on account of its membership of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers.

Incentives and immigration work is handled by specialists within the Division and this will therefore not form part of the role. There is generally a relatively small amount of corporate support work.

This role will be based in our Cardiff Office (although travel to London and/or Oxford will be expected from time to time).  The Cardiff EIR team consists of a partner, PDL, two managing associates, a senior associate, four associates, one paralegal and two secretaries.

Responsibilities

The Associate’s workload will be exclusively employment work.  The associate will mainly be assisting more senior associates and partners with their cases, as well as running his or her own matters under supervision. The caseload will consist of a mix of contentious and non-contentious employment work and the associate will have direct contact with a variety of clients.

The role will develop in accordance with the associate’s own skills, aptitude and preferences and according to the needs of clients and the division.

Additional information

Training

The divisions training programme includes seminars and workshops given by external providers and by our own partners and associates.  We have practice development lawyers who are responsible for knowledge and precedents within the department.  There will be career development opportunities and the successful candidate will be allocated a career development partner (CDP) who will have an overview of their long term career development.

Candidate profile

The successful candidate is likely to have 1-3 years PQE with excellent academics, and gained the benefit of training and development in a well-respected firm

The candidate must have a strong analytical ability, a clear communication style (both spoken and written), excellent client handling skills and, above all, must be a team player.
