Full time Banking Leverage Finance Property Finance

Job Description

The Banking and Finance Group is seeking to recruit a solicitor with 2 to 5 years' UK post-qualification experience.

We want to recruit a lawyer that fulfils the following criteria:

  • Strong academic qualifications from A Levels, with a minimum 2:1 degree
  • At least one Banking and Finance seat completed during the lawyer’s Training Contract
  • 2 to 5 years’ post-qualification experience from a Magic Circle, Silver Circle or regional law firm
  • Good post-qualification experience in (a) leveraged finance, including senior, mezzanine and preferably high yield transactions and/or (b) real estate finance transactions
  • Ambitious, with a genuine commitment to develop their professional and legal skills and the profile of the team
  • Articulate and confident to deliver at the highest standard within a team of highly competent solicitors at the top of their game

The Banking and Finance Group comprises eights partners, supplemented by partners in our Financial Services Regulation and Banking and Finance Litigation groups, supported by a very collegiate and close-knit team of one senior counsel, 19 solicitors, a dedicated PSL, four trainees and four paralegals.  The group has successfully grown over the last five years, and now incorporates a broad range of finance related practice areas – including acquisition finance, restructuring and insolvency, fund finance, real estate finance, structured finance and mezzanine finance.  Our current need to recruit is driven by an increase in work across all areas of our practice.

Lawyers in our Banking and Finance Group are not allocated to particular areas of work or particular partners, and would be exposed to all the areas of work covered by the group.  We encourage some specialisation as associates become more senior but all our associates and partners cover a wide range of the team’s areas of expertise.  Client secondments are common and secondments to overseas law firms may be possible.  We also encourage our assistants to participate in our client and business development activities.

We take a flexible approach to recruitment and aim to recruit people that we believe show talent, motivation and potential – so there is some flexibility in the criteria above where a strong case is clearly shown.

We are recognised for the quality of our work, which competes with the Magic Circle, and the quality of our people is an essential element of this – any recruitment will only be made if this high standard is met, and we will not recruit merely to make up our numbers.

We believe Macfarlanes offers a smart alternative to the Magic Circle, with excellent prospects and a real opportunity for ambitious lawyers to develop and work for quality clients on difficult and rewarding transactions.  Our Banking and Finance team has an proven reputation for producing strong lawyers who feel part of a cohesive, friendly and supportive team, and whose efforts are appreciated and rewarded by the firm.  Part of our drive to achieve is shown by the importance we place on the development of our solicitors’ legal and commercial skills - we believe our Education and Training programme is second to none.

Direct applications only - strictly no recruitment agencies.
