The role and the opportunity

The individual will provide a high quality knowledge service to support our 'Regulatory Disputes' and our broader 'Business Regulatory and Compliance' offering.

Our Regulatory teams cover:

  • Regulated Procurement & FOIA: public procurement; utilities procurement; defence and security procurement; UK-led and by EU institutions; FOIA and ICO.
  • Health, Safety & Environment: UK and international, including crisis response following H&S incidents, internal corporate investigations and investigations by regulators, interviews, criminal prosecutions and other court hearings (including appealing enforcement notices and inquests); Advisory, including H&S policy and protocol review, advice on governance, single pieces of advice and compliance; Corporate Support, including corporate due diligence and advice on indemnities and warranties.
  • Personal Injury defence and advice: for non-insured or self-insured corporate businesses.
  • Product and Consumer Regulation: advice on regulatory issues at all stages of a product's journey starting from R&D, ranging through manufacture, packaging and labelling, advertising and marketing, importing and exporting, selling to consumers, dealing with faulty goods, dealing with regulators and advising on product disposal.
  • Food Law.
  • White collar crime: including financial regulatory, fraud and bribery.
  • Data Protection and Cyber Security.
  • Investigations and Crisis Management in relation to all of the above.
  • The possible impact of Brexit in relation to the above.

Location and Hours of Work

We are happy to consider candidates looking to be based in any of our three UK offices (London, Reading or Bristol), with the role also involving regular travel between the offices.

Due to the nature and size of the role, we are ideally looking for someone to join on a full-time basis, but are willing to consider applicants looking to work on a more flexible basis.

Key responsibilities

  • To keep abreast of global legal and regulatory trends, current and future developments in the practice areas listed above in order to:
    • produce tailored updates for clients;
    • support the biannual Osborne Clarke Regulatory Outlook;
    • identify breaking news stories for clients;
    • spot opportunities for media commentary; and
    • identify cross-overs between regulatory issues / government policy that have general application to these practice areas and to Osborne Clarke's wider business.
  • To organise know-how sharing, including authoring and collecting external and internal know-how, storing it in Osborne Clarke's knowledge systems, and arranging and leading know-how sharing sessions.
  • To organise the team's legal training programme, and deliver sessions within that programme.
  • To deal with queries from lawyers across the Firm and clients regarding current law and practice.
  • To assist in the preparation of client seminars and client training sessions.
  • To work closely with the Litigation Knowledge Lawyer to provide a coordinated Knowledge service to the Litigation Practice Group.
  • To assist in the co-ordination and quality control, in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications teams, of publications/articles/press releases produced by the team for either external or internal publication.

The candidate

  • Strong theoretical, practical and up-to-date knowledge of business regulation and internal / regulatory investigations in some of the practice areas listed above (with a willingness to develop knowledge of new subject areas).
  • Due to the demands of the role, we are ideally looking to an experienced fee earner or knowledge professional with experience spanning contentious and advisory work and gained within a leading business law firm, in-house or at a relevant regulatory body.
  • Enthusiasm for regulatory and compliance work within a client-focused professional services environment.
  • Excellent academics.
  • Client-orientated approach, both internally and externally; ability to think laterally and to develop ideas in relation to business opportunities and training; appreciation of fee earner needs and constraints; commercially aware.
  • Understands and can utilise technological solutions and innovation to deliver service internally and externally.
    Demonstrates behaviours expected of an experienced fee earner and team player; ability to make decisions and progress work and projects quickly without undue process; has confidence in own abilities and generates the confidence of others; a focused "doer".
  • Understands how knowledge is acquired by the lawyer and client audience, particularly in relation to the use of digital media, and how knowledge is now delivered using online and social media tools.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for presenting technical legal and regulatory issues in a clear, approachable and professional way.
  • Proven ability to research and analyse complex areas of law and regulation without supervision and to identify the key commercial issues for Osborne Clarke's clients arising out of that analysis.
  • Enthusiastic and resourceful; pro-active and motivated self-starter with excellent organisational skills; flexible, pragmatic and problem-solving approach.
  • Prior Professional Support Lawyer experience is not a pre-requisite, but a good understanding of how large law firms' Knowledge functions operate and of the wider commercial priorities of a client-focused business is a distinct advantage.
